Girls On The Run Greenbrier County

We have been so blessed to connect with the Greenbrier County Board of Education and a special grant program they are working with—Girls on the Run.

Girls on the Run is a program that considers the whole person – body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection. The middle school program offers an inclusive place of belonging, where girls feel supported and inspired to explore their emotions, cultivate empathy and strengthen their physical and emotional health. At the end of the season, all program participants complete a 5K.

The Shoe Box has been honored to provide running shoes to students in the club at participating schools. In the past month we visited two schools in our county to size students for running shoes! Many students had never seen a brannock (a tool used to determine the proper size shoe) or been fitted for shoes. Each school has around 16 participants. Although the program is called Girls on the Run, one school has opened the program to include boys as well. It was so exciting to finally get to deliver the shoes and present them to the participants in this program.

Trained coaches at each school are hosting a club to inspire students to value what makes them unique. Together, teams uncover confidence and understand the importance of physical and emotional health. The coaches that have volunteered their personal time to better students, is just amazing to me and their dedication does not go unnoticed or unappreciated!

The curriculum helps students to learn more about themselves, become independent and critical thinkers, develop skills to help them on their journeys, and find inner strength through physical activity.

All of these are skills they are learning now but will last a lifetime! We are so thrilled to see this program begin and we're looking forward to watching it grow.

We at The Shoe Box would like to extend our thanks to the Greenbrier County Board of Education for presenting us with this opportunity. We truly enjoy working in this community and serving in this capacity. Also, we would like to thank the teachers/coaches that are devoting their time to this program. You are solely responsible for making such an impact in these young lives, the work you do is irreplaceable. To our friends at Brooks Running for believing in the importance of small businesses and independent shoe stores and working with us to insure we have the shoes and sizes that we need for the runners! And lastly and most importantly the students for participating in the program...without you none of this is possible.

You can find out more about the program itself at Girls On The Run website.
